ATLANTA – Coming off of an impressive performance at the Georgia Intercollegiate Invitational, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will head out to Orlando, Fla. for the UCF Invitational. The meet will take place on March 23 and 24 at the UCF Track and Field Complex.
A total of eight-ranked programs will compete at the UCF Invitational this Friday and Saturday. Tech is one of 28 teams to travel to Orlando for the meet.
Tech will face off against the host team of the 12th-ranked Knights, Clemson (No. 4), Florida (No. 11) and Baylor (No. 13) among others while ranked men’s teams from Florida (No. 1), Virginia Tech (No. 10), Baylor (No. 12) and Princeton (No. 22) will also display their talents.
Women’s javelin will kick off Friday’s action at noon. Saturday’s schedule will begin at 9 a.m. with women’s discus. Admittance is free to the public.
Friday’s competition will begin at 2 p.m. with the pole vault and javelin, followed by the long jump and hammer throw. The track competition will commence with the 10,000m run at 6:45 p.m. followed by the 3,000m steeplechase.
On Saturday, the day will start out with the discus at 9:30 a.m. followed by the high jump, triple jump and shot put. The running events will begin at Noon with the 4x100m relay followed by the 1,500m run, 100/110m hurdles, the 400m dash, 100m dash, 800m run, 400m hurdles, 5,000m run and ending with the 4x400m relay.
The Yellow Jackets saw 13 first place finishes at the meet including a school record in the men’s pole vault. The record, set by freshman Nikita Kirillov, marks the second school record set by the rookie. Kirillov launched himself 5.27m (17-3.5) into the air, smashing the previous school record of 16-6.75 set by Jamie Traylor in 1994. For his efforts, Kirillov was named the ACC Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
