Tech Track Opens Indoor Season Saturday

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech track and field team will open the 2013-14 indoor season at the Orange & Purple Winter Classic on Saturday hosted by Clemson at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex.

The meet begins with the men’s and women’s long jumps and women’s weight throw at 11 a.m., followed by the start of running events at 1 p.m. Teams slated to compete in the meet are Anderson, East Tennessee State, Georgia Tech, UNC Asheville, SC State and Virginia.

A total of 49 Yellow Jackets will compete in 20 events as the Tech men return All-ACC performer and school record holder pole vaulter Nikita Kirillov, along with honorable mention outdoor All-American Brandon Lasater. Kirillov, who did not compete last indoor season, holds the Georgia Tech outdoor pole vault record at 5.54m (18-2.00).

First-team All-American and reigning ACC indoor and outdoor triple jump champion Jonathan Gardner returns to the field for his junior season although he won’t compete this weekend.

Lasater and junior Jeremy Greenwald are coming off cross country NCAA South All-Region honors and will compete together in the men’s distance medley relay.

First-team All-America honoree Julienne McKee will begin her senior season this weekend. Last season, McKee not only qualified for the Indoor NCAA Championships in the triple jump, placing eighth with a distance of 13.05m (42-09.75).
