Tech Track & Field Set To Compete At ACC Indoor Championships

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will be in action this weekend at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Blacksburg, Va. The meet will run from Friday, February 16-Saturday, February 17.

Both teams have turned in strong performances during the indoor season and will look to continue that trend this weekend at the conference meet.

On the women’s side, the Yellow Jackets will be led in the meet by senior Becky Megesi and junior Sara Pardue. Both earned All-America honors a year ago as part of Tech’s indoor distance medley relay team and Pardue won the ACC title in the 800 meters, along with earning All-America honors in that event as well. Another performer that will return from 2000’s DMR team is junior Nicole Campbell, who currently has the 10th-fastest (2:13.96) time in the ACC in the 800 meters.

Tech will have a number of competitors that have ranked in the top 10 in the ACC this year, including sophomore Amy Dock, who has the third-fastest (17:34.59) time in the 5,000 meters. Also Jessica DeFreitas and Alisha McClinton have recorded the fourth and fifth-fastest ACC 60 meters times with their marks of 7.54 and 7.60 seconds.

In the men’s meet, Tech will be returning the reigning ACC Rookie of the Year in sophomore Brendan Mahoney. Mahoney won the 2000 ACC Indoor mile with a time of 4:09.25 to become the third Yellow Jacket to win that event. Other returning All-ACC honorees from last year at the indoor meet include Clayton Porter in the long jump, who also has the second-best jump in the ACC this year.

Sophomore Keith Schuler, who placed third in the high jump at the ACC meet in 2000, has a top mark of 6’11.75 in 2001. Tech’s final indoor All-ACC performer is Sharif Azim, who was a member of the Jackets’ 4×400 relay team a year ago.
