May 4, 2008

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track & field and cross country teams celebrated its 2007-08 season by recognizing the team’s student-athletes at the end-of-season banquet Sunday afternoon.

The day began with the announcement of the men’s and women’s cross country performers of the year. Elena Linn, the women’s recipient, earned All-South Region honors and was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Women’s Team. David Herren was awarded the men’s award for becoming only the fourth Yellow Jacket in men’s history to compete at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. He earned All-South Region honors and was named to the All-ACC Academic Men’s Team. Herren was also named an USTFCCCA Academic All-American for his hard work in competition and in the classroom.

To open the track & field awards, the men’s team distributed two team specific awards. Alphonso Jordan was named the 2007-08 Jeff Larkin Spirit Award recipient. The Larkin Award is presented to the men’s athlete that works hard everyday and is always in high spirits in practice and competition. James Lemons II was celebrated with the program’s highest honor, the Buddy Fowlkes Competitor Award, for leading the team as a captain and performing at the highest level.

Lemons was also the winner of the Men’s Field Most Valuable Performer. Kimery Hern, the Georgia Tech record-holder in the hammer throw, was named the Women’s Field Most Valuable Performer.

Shantia Moss was awarded the Women’s Track Most Valuable Performer after earning All-America in the 60-meter hurdles and All-ACC honors in the 100-meter hurdles. The Men’s Track Most Valuable Performer Award went to E.C. Gibbs, who has earned an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the 1500-meter run and All-ACC performer in the Distance Medley Relay.

The Jackets return to action next weekend when they travel to the Orange & Purple Classic on Saturday, May 10 in Clemson, S.C.
