Tech Track and Field Set for Florida Relays, Stanford Invitational

March 28, 2002

ATLANTA – Fresh off an impressive showing at the FSU Relays, the Georgia Tech men and women’s track and field teams return to the Sunshine State Friday for the 59th annual Florida Relays at the University of Florida’s Percy Beard Track Stadium in Gainesville. Additionally, three Jackets will compete in the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.

Heading west for the women will be sophomore All-American Renee Metivier, who will compete in the 5000 meters, and junior Katie Griffin, who will tackle the 10,000 meters. Both will compete Friday. On the men’s side, sophomore All-American Brendon Mahoney will race in the 1500 meters Saturday.

The contingent in Gainesville will be led by senior Nicole Campbell, who provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.22 at the FSU Relays. Classmate Sara Pardue will join her in that event.

Other strong showings for the women should come from Tech’s talented group of 100-meter hurdlers, led by senior Alisha McClinton, and the throwers, paced by Angela Levens and Dana Hall.

Several of the Jackets’ top field event personnel will compete in the invitational portion of the meet, meaning their marks ranked among the top 12 entries in the meet. Senior Mishanta Reyes and junior Jessica DeFreitas will compete in the long jump, freshman Shanta Smith is in the triple jump and senior Jennifer Ledbetter is in the high jump.

As for the men, juniors Chris Crawley and Brian Fraser made the long jump field, as did freshman Zeb Sion and Jonathan Spillman in the shot put. Freshman Ian Brewer will compete in the hammer throw, while senior Chris Sinotte, who set the school record in the javelin last weekend, will compete in that event.

Jacket assistant coach Chris Huffins will compete in the invitational discus.

On the track, the men will be led by 400-meter specialists Bryan Swarn, Brian Ford and Sharif Azim. This trio will also make up three-fourths of the Jackets 4×400 relay, which will compete Saturday.

Senior Joe Stegall should excel in the 1500 meters, as he owns the top time in the ACC this season.

This meet includes world-class competitors, top high school teams, in addition to the collegiate competition. Tech’s field event competitors will be in action on Friday and Saturday, while the individual running events take place Friday. The relay portion of the meet will begin Saturday.
