Tech Track and Field Set For Clemson Invitational

Jan. 23, 2004

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete in its third indoor meet of the season at the Clemson Invitational, in Clemson, S.C., this Saturday, Jan. 24. It’s the second of six indoor meets that Tech will compete in at the new Clemson Indoor Track and Field facility, which will host the 2004 Indoor ACC Championships (Feb. 20-21). The all day competition is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. with the women’s weight throw.

“This will be the first scoring meet of the season,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “It adds a little more intensity to the event and we’re looking forward to competing inside Clemson’s great new facility.”

Headlining the competition for the Yellow Jacket women will be sophomore All-American Chaunte Howard (Riverside, Calif.), along with senior Amandi Rhett (Willingboro, N.J.) and juniors Shanta Smith (Miami, Fla.) and Dana Rogers (East Point, Ga.), along with freshman Ashlee Kidd (St. Petersburg, Fla.).

“We’re looking forward to the meet,” said women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “The conference meet will be held in this facility and it’s great for our athletes to familiarize themselves with the track. A number of top ACC teams will be there in Clemson and Florida State, along with defending ACC champion North Carolina. Georgia will also be there and it’s always good for our athletes to go head-to-head with the Bulldogs.”

Howard tied an indoor school record at the Clemson Opener back on Dec. 6 with a mark of 6’2.25″. She claimed first place at the Kentucky Invitational last weekend (Jan. 16-17) with a clear of 5’10.00″.

Rhett claimed top honors in the 60-meter dash at the Clemson Opener with a time of 7.55. She tallied a season-best time of 7.46 in the finals of the 60-meter dash at the Kentucky Invitational. Rhett also posted a NCAA provisional mark of 24.17 in the 200 meters.

Smith broke an indoor school record in the triple Jump at the Clemson Opener with a mark of 43’4.50″. She finished fifth a week ago with a jump of 40’3.50″.

Rogers owns the top mark for the season in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.50 at the Clemson Opener.

Kidd posted a NCAA provisional time of 54.01 in the 400 meters last Saturday at the Kentucky Invite.

Returning to action for the men will be All-American Brendon Mahoney (Cumming, Ga.). Mahoney will be competing for the first time this indoor season in the mile and 800 meters.

All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer Kyle Rabbitt (Red Oak, Ga.) will also be seeing his first action this indoor season. Rabbitt broke the indoor school records in the 3000 and 5000 meters a year ago and will compete in the 3000 meters for Tech.

High Jumper Michael Massey (Asheboro, N.C.) will shoot for three straight high jump crowns this weekend as he will be in action for the Yellow Jackets. His top mark through two events is 7’0.25″.
