ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men and women’s track and field teams will continue their seasons this weekend at a pair of meets, the Tyson Invitational at the University of Arkansas and the Rod McCravy Memorial Track and Field Meet at the University of Kentucky.
While the majority of the teams will be heading to Kentucky’s Nutter Field House for the third time this season, some of the Jackets’ top talent will head to Arkansas’ Randal Tyson Track Center, the site of the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Leading this contingent will be a trio of women in the seeded 3000 meters. Junior Amy Dock and sophomores Katie Griffin and Renee Metivier will all compete in a field of 13 of the nation’s top distance runners on Saturday. Also making the trip are senior Nicole Campbell, who will run the 800 meters and the mile on Friday, as well as junior All-Americans Brendon Mahoney and Bryan Swarn. Swarn will compete in the 400 meters, while Mahoney will run the 800 and mile, all on Friday.
As for the contingent headed to Kentucky, action will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, with the start of several field events. Field events will continue at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, while running begins at 12:30 p.m. The meet will conclude with the 4×400 relay.
Leading the women’s squad in Lexington will be senior Mishanta Reyes, who will compete in the long jump and 60-meter hurdles, throwers Dana Hall and Angela Levens, high jumpers Jennifer Ledbetter and Jamie Ostrov and senior Sara Pardue in the 800 meters. Freshman standout Shanta Smith will run the 400 meters.
The men’s squad will be paced by Sharif Azim and Brian Ford in the 400 meters, as well as senior Joe Stegall in the mile and freshmen Jonathan Spillman and Zeb Sion in the shot put. The mile relay squad of Azim, Ford, Aaron Sink and David Franklin should also make an impact.
Following this weekend, Tech travels to Gainesville, Fla., for the Gator Invitational next weekend. This meet will be the final competition prior to the ACC Indoor Championships, which will be held February 15-16 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
