Tech Track and Field Returns to Competition at Kentucky Invitational

Jan. 10, 2002

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men and women’s track and field teams will return to competition for the first time in over a month on Friday at the Kentucky Invitational at the University of Kentucky’s Nutter Field House.

Having opened the season in Lexington at the Wildcat Speed Meet on December 7, the Yellow Jackets face some quality competition this weekend. Joining Tech at the meet will be the host Wildcats, as well as Southeastern Conference foes Tennessee, Auburn, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt’s women. Eastern Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State, Arkansas State, Western Kentucky, Marshall, Brevard and Georgia State will also compete.

Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday with the several field events, followed by the distance medley relay. Saturday’s competition will open with the men’s high jump at 10:30 a.m. and will conclude with the 4×400 meter relays.

Leading the way for the Jackets’ women’s squad will be Cassandra Worthy and Angela Levens, who established school records in the shot put and weight throw, respectively, in the season-opening meet. Levens, as well as high jumper Jamie Ostrov, have each already met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Marks in their respective events. Ostrov’s mark of 5′ 9.75″ stands as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top performance this season.

Senior Mishanta Reyes owns the league’s best time in the 60-meter hurdles (8.65) and is closely followed by teammate Tosan Osaigbovo (8.66).

As for Tech’s men, All-American and team captain Bryan Swarn owns the ACC’s top performance in the 400 meters (48.20). Freshmen Zeb Sion and Jonathan Spillman rank first and second among league shot putters on the young season. Sion’s mark of 53’10.50″ leads the way.

Freshman Donald Beamer posted the Jackets’ top performances in the 60 and 200 meters in the first meet.

Following this meet, Tech travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to compete in the UNC Invitational on Saturday, January 19.
