Tech Track and Field Enjoys Strong Day at MTSU Invitational

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Led by victories in a combined 12 events, the Georgia Tech men and women’s track and field teams continued their strong indoor seasons Saturday at the MTSU Invitational at MTSU’s Murphy Center.

On the women’s side, senior Dana Hall eclipsed the Tech school record in the shot put with a winning toss of 48’04.00″. Teammate Cassandra Worthy placed third in the event.

Sophomore Jessica DeFreitas posted wins in both the 55 meters (7.00) and long jump (19’08.75″). She was closely followed by teammate Amandi Rhett in the 55 meters, as she posted a time of 7.02 to place second. DeFreitas’ mark in the long jump was a season-best.

Other victories for the women came from senior Angela Levens, who won the weight throw with a mark of 59’00.25″, and Jennifer Ledbetter, who won the high jump with a leap of 5’06.00″.

As for the men, Tech got seven wins, including season-best performances in the pole vault from freshman Alex Berardi (14’07.00″) and weight throw from classmate Ian Brewer (51’03.75″). Tech also placed first in the mile relay, clocking a season-best time of 3:11.95.

Other wins came from Jeffrey Boyd in the 3000 meters (8:51.79), Matt O’Brien in the mile (4:23.93), Chris Crawley in the long jump (24’00.50″) and freshman Zeb Sion in the shot put (54’07.70″).

The Jackets also got strong performances from its trio of 400-meter runners, who placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Freshman Brian Ford led the way with a career indoor best of 48.27.

Tech returns to action next weekend, as it travels to Lexington, Ky., for the Wildcat Classic.
