Tech Third in ACC Preseason Poll, Three Preseason All-ACC Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – No. 9 Georgia Tech volleyball was picked to finish third in the 2022 ACC preseason coaches poll, led by preseason all-ACC team selections Julia Bergmann, Bianca Bertolino and Erin Moss, the league office announced Tuesday.

The announcement marks the third consecutive year the Jackets have been slotted to finish third in the conference with multiple preseason all-ACC selections. A season ago, both preseason all-ACC selections in Bergmann and current professional Mariana Brambilla went on to be named unanimous first team all-ACC, the former of whom also became ACC player of the year. All three of Georgia Tech’s preseason all-ACC selections in 2020 went on to garner all-ACC honors as well following the regular season – Brambilla (unanimous first team), Bergmann (unanimous first team) and graduated Matti McKissock (second team).

Bergmann enters the year on the heels of one of the most decorated individual seasons in Yellow Jacket history in 2021 as well as a summer with Brazil’s national team. The vaunted outside hitter propelled Brazil to take silver in the Volleyball Nations League after finishing second on serve receive as well as top five on her squad in five different categories in the competition amongst the world’s best. On The Flats, Bergmann racked up honors at a historic pace being named an AVCA first team all-American, AVCA east coast region player of the year, AVCA east coast all-region, ACC player of the year and unanimous first team all-ACC. The Brazilian was the driving force behind Tech’s renowned attack, leading the ACC in both points and kills as she was once national player of the week and a five-time ACC player of the week.

Bertolino approaches the 2021 slate following a stellar freshman season on The Flats as she was selected to the ACC all-freshman team after leading the league in ACC Freshman of the Week honors with five. Moss, meanwhile, was one of the country’s most efficient attackers a season ago, ranking third in the ACC in hitting percentage at a 0.381 clip. That mark ranks among the best in a season in Yellow Jacket history, placing seventh all time in single-season hitting percentage.

The White and Gold concluded the historic 2021 season at 26-6 overall and 14-4 in ACC play after advancing to the Elite Eight for the second time in program history. The Jackets made back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances for the first time since advancing to the Big Dance five consecutive seasons from 2000-04.

Tech will open the regular season on the road at the Ole Miss Invitational by taking on host Ole Miss on Friday at 5 p.m. in Oxford, Miss. The Jackets will make their official return to O’Keefe Gymnasium hosting the GT Invitational, beginning with Dayton (Sept. 2).
