ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team returns to action at 2 p.m. Thursday, as it hosts Georgia State in non-conference action at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
“We are looking forward to our match against Georgia State,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “We have been practicing hard since our last match but we need another match to get us in a pressure situation to see if we have improved. I believe we have but we will see Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets (3-2), returning to action after two-weeks off from competition, hold a 29-1 series advantage over the Panthers (0-7). Tech won last season’s matchup by a score of 6-1.
The Jackets are ranked No. 55 in the latest ITA Tennis National Rankings, and last competed at the ITA National Team Indoor Qualifier in Waco, Texas. Tech defeated San Diego State 4-1 in the opener, before falling to No. 10 Baylor, 6-1, in the next round.
Sophomore Guillermo Gomez’ is currently the 14th-ranked singles player in the nation with an 18-4 record on the year, going 2-1 in dual match play at the No. 1 position.
Freshman Kevin King, ranked No. 29 regionally, is 4-1 in both singles and doubles in dual match play. King and partner Doug Kenny suffered just their first loss of the season against Dominik Mueller and Maros Horny Baylor on Jan. 31.
