The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team opened the ITA Region II by sweeping its three singles matches and one doubles match in the first day of competition in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Friday.
Sophomore Roger Anderson, the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, defeated High Point’s Rohan Wadehra, 6-1, 6-2 in a first-round match. Anderson will face Florida State’s Xavier Luscan Saturday at 8 a.m.
Tech senior Sergio Aguirre overcame a 2-6 first game loss to defeat Liberty’s Ricardo Shinozaki, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5. Aguirre plays 14th-seed Pyung Koo Lee of Hampton Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Yellow Jacket sophomore David Wright gave Tech a perfect day in singles play on Friday. Wright defeated James Madison’s Luis Rosado, 7-6, 6-0, and will face Virginia Commonwealth’s Florian Marquardt on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets also rolled through doubles play, with Anderson and Wright teaming to defeat Clemson’s duo of Marko Gojanovic and Lee Walker, 8-2.
In women’s regional play, the Yellow Jackets advanced in doubles plays in the ITA South Regional in Mobile, Ala. Sophomores Jaime Wong and Mysti Morris defeated Audra Adams and Julie DeRoo, 8-5, and will face third-seed Marcela Kotesovcova and Silvia Sosnarova Saturday at 2 p.m. Freshman Kristen Roberson teamed with senior Bobbi Guthrie, Tech’s career doubles leader, to defeat Camilla Gould and Mira Radu, 8-6. They play Ann-Jeanette Svantesson and Daniela Okal on Saturday afternoon.
In singles play, Guthrie, Morris and Wong lost first-round matches and will play in the consolation draw on Saturday. Guthrie fell to Sonja Prokopec, 1-6, 7-5, 3-6. Morris dropped her match to 10th-seed Martina Ondrejkova, 1-6, 0-6, and Wong fell to the 9th seed, Anneliese Rose, 3-6, 1-6.
