Oct. 21, 2004

ATLANTA – Three Georgia Tech men’s tennis players head to Chapel Hill, N.C. to compete in the ITA Region II Qualifier. Sophomores Zachary Rath and Jose Luis Muguruza and freshman David North will represent the Jackets in the tournament.

Tech begins action at 8:30 a.m. when Zachary Rath takes on Allen Simmons of Furman. David North is scheduled to face off against Richmond’s Derek Schwandt at 10 a.m. Ninth seeded Jose Luis Muguruza received a bye in the first round and will face either Jonathan Janda of North Carolina or Andrew Hamar of Wake Forest at 2 p.m. on Friday. No time has been set for Georgia Tech doubles yet.

Rath, a native of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is currently 7-3 going into Regionals. The sophomore went 3-0 in the Georgia Tech Invitational before falling in three sets in the finals. Rath advanced to the qualifying round of the Icy Hot/ITA All-American as the `lucky loser.’ In the tournament, Rath posted a 4-2 record.

Fellow sophomore Muguruza has also posted a 7-3 record this fall. Muguruza fell in the first round of the Georgia Tech Invite before sweeping through the consolation bracket. In the Southern Intercollegiate, he posted a 3-1 record and reached the quarterfinals.

North, the lone freshman making the trip, heads into the qualifier with a 1-5 record. The freshman fell to the eventually champion at the Georgia Tech Invitational. North teamed with Scott Blackmon in doubles, and the duo reached the finals of the Southern Intercollegiate.

Rath and North will pair up for doubles action for the Yellow Jackets. The ITA Region II Qualifier marks the first time the tandem has teamed up. North comes into the qualifier with a 3-3 doubles mark, while Rath is 1-2 this fall.
