THE FLATS – Georgia Tech continues its gauntlet of matches against ranked opponents from the Southeastern Conference with a 2 p.m. contest Tuesday at 11th-ranked Tennessee.
The Yellow Jackets (6-3), who have dropped three of their last four matches, are facing their fourth top-25 foe from the SEC. The Volunteers are 10-4 this spring, and both teams are coming off 4-0 losses to Georgia.
Head coach Kenny Thorne’s team owns a victory over 17th-ranked South Carolina and has lost to No. 28 Auburn and No. 35 Georgia.
Tech is led by sophomore Nathan Rakitt of Marietta, Ga., who has a 5-3 record at the top of the lineup. He is followed in the order by freshman Carlos Benito (Madrid, Spain), 5-3 at No. 2, Eduardo Segura (Madrid, Spain), 5-3 at No. 3, sophomore Casey Kay (Atlanta, Ga.), 3-4 at No. 4, freshman Cole Fiegel (Alachua, Fla.), 7-1 at No. 5, and freshman Will Showers (Gainesville, Ga.), 2-2 at No. 6.
The Jackets have the nation’s 36th-ranked doubles team at the top of their order in Benito and Segura, who are 7-1.
Following Tuesday’s match, Tech returns home for a pair of matches on the weekend, hosting Georgia State Friday evening and then resuming ACC play against No. 60 Miami on Sunday, both at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
