Tech Takes Doubles Point in Loss to South Carolina, 5-2

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis dropped its match to South Carolina on Sunday, 5-2. Chen Dong shined on the day winning his doubles match and his singles match.

In doubles competition, the Gamecocks took No. 1 doubles, 6-3, before the Yellow Jackets would bounce back to take the doubles point. No. 2 doubles featured Andres Martin and Chen Dong who faced Beasley/Samuel, taking the match 6-4. No. 3 doubles comprising of Brandon McKinney and Ángel Guerrero Melgar secured their match against Lambling/Story, 6-4.

In singles play, South Carolina jumped out to a fast start. The Gamecocks took the first set of each singles match and would take the first five singles matches at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-4, No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4, No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4, No. 2 singles, 7-6(4), 6-4 and No. 5 singles, 6-3, 7-6(2) to take a 5-1 lead.

After No. 5 singles ended, the lone remaining match was in a decisive third tiebreaker set. After dropping the first set 3-6, Dong came back to take set two 6-4. The tiebreaker set was a back and forth affair which Dong would ultimately take, 14-12.

The White and Gold return home to face Georgia in a week on Sunday, Feb. 13. The match starts at 12 p.m.
