ATLANTA – With a successful 2002-03 season in the pool winding down, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were each honored for their work in the classroom and named Academic All-American Teams for Fall 2002 by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
Tech’s men’s team posted a 3.29 combined grade point average, which ranks as the fifth highest in the nation among Division I teams. The Yellow Jacket men earned a Superior Rating (3.25 and above) for their efforts this fall and trailed only American, Brigham Young, Loyola College (Md.) and Evansville in the rankings.
The Tech women’s squad tallied a combined GPA of 3.13 to rank 40th among Division I women’s teams and received an Excellent Rating (3.00-3.24). Arkansas had a team mark of 3.644 to top the women’s list.
Teams must have posted a GPA of 2.80 for the entire squad in order to be eligible. Rankings will also be announced for spring semester and individual All-America accolades will be handed out at this time. The Jackets combined for six CSCAA Academic All-Americans a year ago.
Tech concludes its season next weekend, when senior Shilo Ayalon and freshman Sam Morgan compete in the 2003 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, March 27-29, in Austin, Texas.
