Tech Swimming and Diving Splits with NC State, Men Down Wolfpack, 146.5-89.5

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s swimming and diving team defeated Atlantic Coast Conference opponent NC State, 146.5-89.5, Saturday at Emory’s Woodruff P.E. Center. Despite a strong performance, the Yellow Jacket women fell to the Wolfpack by a score of 138-102.

Leading the way for Tech’s men (5-3, 3-1 ACC) were senior David Laitala, who won both the 100-yard butterfly (49.61) and 100 backstroke, and junior Shilo Ayalon, who captured the 500 free (4:34.69) and 400 IM (4:00.17). Laitala’s mark of 51.24 in the backstroke was a Tech season-best. Senior Josh Hersko also won a pair of events, as he claimed victory in the 100 free (46.90) and 200 free (1:42.16).

Junior Robbie Foster placed first in the 100 breast, edging teammate Tomonori Tsuji in a time of 56.30. Tech also won both the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays.

As for the women’s side, freshman Cara DeVinny became the first Tech women’s swimmer to earn an NCAA “B” cut, as she won the 400 IM in a school-record time of 4:24.71. The Jackets posted five other wins on the women’s side, as Tech opened the meet with a season-best performance of 1:48.01in a 200 medley relay victory.

Freshman Moeko Wallis won the 50 (24.44) and 100 free (53.55), while classmate Anna Saum was victorious in the 100 fly in a time of 58.18. Freshman Jenny Lentz won the 100 breast in 1:06.84.

Tech’s women are now 4-6 overall and 0-4 in the ACC.

The Yellow Jackets return to action next Saturday, as they host Western Kentucky in the final dual meet of the season.
