Tech Swimming and Diving Posts Strong Opening Session Versus Purdue, Cincinnati

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – With season-best performances in nearly every event, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams enjoyed a strong first session Friday in a two-day meet against Purdue and Cincinnati at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

The Yellow Jacket men lead the Bearcats, 128-52, and trail No. 18 Purdue, 113.5-72.5, while the women are ahead of Cincinnati, 137-46, and are behind the No. 19 Boilermakers, 149-37. The meet concludes Saturday with nine events beginning at noon.

Senior All-American Shilo Ayalon led Tech’s men Friday, posting a win in the 1000 free and anchoring the Jackets’ victorious 800 free relay. He took the 1000 in a season-best time of 9:05.97, while the team of Itai Eden, Matt Figh, Ofir Sorias and Ayalon won the 800 free relay in 6:46.96.

Tech also enjoyed a strong showing in the 100 breast, where senior Tomonori Tsuji placed second in a season-best mark of 56.76 and classmate Robbie Foster took fourth in 57.21.

Other runner-up finishes for the Yellow Jacket men came from junior Paul McCarty (one-meter diving), Eden (200 fly), junior Mike Comer (50 free) and the 200 medley relay team.

Tech’s women’s team got solid individual swims from sophomore Anna Saum, who placed third in the 100 back in 57.37, freshman Laura Heiser, who took third in the 100 breast (1:06.22) and freshman Elizabeth Foster, who finished third in the 200 individual medley (2:08.16). Each mark was a season-best for the Jackets.

Additionally, sophomore Michelle Maguire eclisped her own Tech school record in the 1000 free with a time of 10:22.55. She placed fifth in the race.Tech got runner-up finishes from freshman diver Laurissa Prystaj on the three-meter board, as well as the 200 medley relay team of Saum, Heiser, Meghan DeVinney and Moeko Wallis.
