Tech Swimming and Diving Completes Day Two of Competition at Georgia Invitational

ATHENS – The Tech men and women’s swimming and diving teams’ second day of competition at the Georgia Invitational was highlighted by another Yellow Jacket men’s swimmer posting an NCAA “B” Qualifying Standard. Tech’s men are in sixth place with 228 points, while the women are ninth with 35 points.

Senior co-captain David Laitala posted a time of 48.61 in the 100-yard butterfly to finish fifth and earn the “B” qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships. Also posting quality swims for the men were senior Leo Salinas, who placed eighth in the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:39.80, and junior All-American Tomonori Tsuji, who finished eighth in the 100 breast with a season-best time of 56.38.

Tech’s men’s 800-yard freestyle relay placed third, the squad’s highest finish of the meet, in a time of 6:42.07. The team was comprised of senior Shilo Ayalon, Laitala, junior Josh Hersko and Salinas.

Ayalon also placed 11th in the 400 IM with a time of 3:59.32, yet another season-best. Senior Carl Nylander was close behind, finishing 14th.

On the women’s side, freshman Cara DeVinny led the way with a 12th-place finish in the 400 IM. She posted her top time of the season, 4:25.97, in the morning’s prelims. Teammate Michelle Maguire was 21st in that same event.

Anna Saum posted a season-best performance in the 100 fly with a time of 57.53.

Action will continue tomorrow with prelims at 9:30 p.m., followed by finals at 3 p.m.
