ATLANTA – Already assured of the best year in program history, the Georgia Tech softball team (41-15, 6-2 ACC) hopes to close out the regular season in strong fashion, beginning with a 4 p.m. CT doubleheader at Samford (20-28, 5-13 Atlantic Sun) Wednesday.
The Jackets also have doubleheaders with Mercer and Georgia slated for Friday and Sunday, respectively, as they begin preparation for the ACC Tournament and a possible bid to the NCAA regionals.
Last time out, Tech swept another Atlantic Sun opponent, winning a pair at Jacksonville State April 20. Freshman pitcher Jessica Sallinger (19-7), who struck out a school-record14 batters, and sophomore designated player Tasha Waugh, who homered twice, led the Jackets to the win in game two and the sweep.
In the Bulldogs’ last action, they dropped a pair of one-run games to Georgia State Monday in Atlanta.
Samford is led offensively by a pair of .300 hitters, Janet Middleton (.357-4-18) and Angela Bednark (.302-8-26).
Tech has played the Bulldogs more than any other opponent, owning a 39-24 all-time record in the series. The Jackets swept both games in Atlanta a year ago, winning 3-0 and 2-0 at Glenn Field. On the last trip to Birmingham, Tech also posted a pair of wins during the 2000 season. Samford last defeated the Jackets in 1999.
