Tech Softball Drops Pair of ACC Games To Virginia

Charlottesville, Va. – The Georgia Tech softball team was unable to solve the pitching of Virginia and dropped a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference road contests to the Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon at The Park in Charlottesville, Va. The Yellow Jackets (22-19, 1-3 ACC) took an early lead in game one but were unable to hold on before dropping a 2-1 decision. In the second game, Meaghan Young’s eighth-inning solo home run lifted the Cavaliers (39-13, 2-2 ACC) to a 1-0 win.

In the day’s first contest, the Yellow Jackets jumped on the board first in the game’s opening frame as Jamie Frost drew a leadoff walk and stole second before reaching third on a wild pitch. She scored two batters later when Erin Hawley sent an RBI single into right field.

The Cavaliers tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning as Kelly McCabe led off the frame with a single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Heather Field. McCabe scored on the play when Jacket second baseman Ellen Styer’s throw to second went into the outfield.

Virginia threatened in both the fourth and sixth innings as the Cavs had runners on second and third with one out in both frames before the Jackets escaped with two-straight outs to avoid further damage. In the fourth Tech starter Erin Voeltz struck out Katie Weinberg and got Meaghan Young to line out, and in the sixth, Voeltz struck out both pinch hitter Joanna Barstad and Young to end the frame.

Virginia took the win in the bottom of the seventh inning as McCabe led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Heather Field. McCabe then came home with the winning run when Ruby Rojas hit her second double in as many at bats for the final 2-1 margin.

Both pitchers were dominating throughout the contest allowing only nine hits combined for the two teams and striking out a combined 20 batters. Jessica Edwards earned the win for UVA as she went the distance allowing one run on three hits while striking out 13. Voeltz (11-10) took the loss for the Jackets as she also had a complete-game outing, allowing just one earned run while scattering six hits and striking out seven.

In the second game of the twin bill, Tech starter Erin Voeltz and Cavalier hurler Erin Allinder combined on 7.5 scoreless innings to open the game. The Jackets escaped a jam in the seventh inning, as UVA had runners on second and third with one out before Voeltz struck out Ruby Rojas and got Heather Owings to ground out to end the threat.

Tech was unable to push across a run in its half of the eighth inning, going down in order, giving Virginia a chance to claim the win. After Voeltz induced a flyout by Julie Bumler, the next batter, Meaghan Young, sent the first pitch she saw over the right-field wall to give the Cavaliers the 1-0 win.

Virginia starter Erin Allinder (11-3) went the distance for the shutout win, limiting the Jackets to two hits, while striking out two. Voeltz (11-11) was again the hard-luck loser as she tossed 7.1 scoreless innings, allowing the lone run while striking out six Cavalier hitters. The Yellow Jackets will return to action tomorrow, when they travel to Maryland for another ACC doubleheader beginning at noon.
