THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to compete in the 2014 ACC Championships at Panorama Farms Cross Country Course in Charlottesville, Va.  The women’s 6K race will start at 10 a.m., followed by the men’s 8K competition at 10:45 a.m.

Both men’s and women’s championships will be carried live on ESPN3 for the first time. Coverage begins with the women’s race at 10:00 a.m. and concludes at 11:30 a.m.

The women’s race features six schools ranked in the top 30 of the weekly USTFCCCA poll.  Florida State enters Friday’s competition as the highest ranked ACC team at No. 12 nationally.  The Seminoles are followed by Virginia (13th), North Carolina (15th), Syracuse (16th), NC State (18th) and Boston College (30th).

On the men’s side, Syracuse enters the ACC Championship as the nation’s third-ranked team, while Virginia is 13th, Florida State is 15th and UNC is 28th.

The Yellow Jacket women are coming off a second-place performance at the Crimson Classic, while the men placed third out of 24 teams.

The women’s team is paced by seniors Kelly Meyer and Katie Townsend, who have been the two top finishers for Tech throughout the season.  Townsend earned ACC Female Cross Country Performer of the Week honors after her second place finish at the UGA Invite (Sept. 6).  The Yellow Jackets have not placed lower than second all season and won the Upstate Invitational (Oct. 4) with all five point scorers finishing in the top 10.

The men are led by senior Jeremy Greenwald, who finished first for Tech in all four regular season meets.  Greenwald won the first three meets of the season and received ACC weekly honors twice (Sept. 9 & Oct. 7).  As a team, the men won both the UGA Invite (Sept. 6) and the Florida Mountain Dew Invite (Sept. 20), and have not placed lower than third all season.

At last year’s competition, the men’s and women’s team finished ninth and 12th, respectively.  Townsend was the top finisher for the Tech women, running the 6K in 22:06 for 65th place.  Greenwald finished second for the men and logged a time of 25:04 for 42nd place in the 8K.
