ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will open its 2008-09 campaign this weekend when it hosts the Georgia Tech Invitational at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
The Yellow Jackets will face opponents from Georgia, Arizona State and Princeton in the three-day flighted tournament, which begins Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday’s matches will get underway at 9:30 a.m., while Sunday’s will commence at 9 a.m.
Georgia Tech, who finished the 2008 season ranked sixth in the nation, won its second straight National Women’s Indoor title and reached the quarterfinal round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
“I am really excited to see us compete, especially our four freshmen,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “This will be their first college experience and I want to see how they deal with the pressures of a live match.”
Junior Amanda McDowell, who is the reigning NCAA Individual Champion, leads a roster that includes senior Christy Striplin and sophomores Noelle Hickey and Sasha Krupina. Tech also welcomes four freshmen – Lynn Blau, Hillary Davis, Irina Falconi and Viet Ha Ngo – to its roster.
“We are going to be facing some the best competition in the country this weekend,” Shelton added.
Georgia reached the round-of-16 at the 2008 NCAA Championships. The Bulldogs fell to Arkansas, 4-2, and finished the season ranked eighth.
Arizona State, which closed out the season ranked 23rd in the ITA polls, also played in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, falling in the second round to Fresno State, 4-1.
Princeton, who has the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in the nation, opened its 2008-09 season by hosting the Princeton Invitational last weekend.
