Tech Opens Dual-Match Season with Georgia State Wednesday

Jan. 18, 2005

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will open its 2005 dual-match season by hosting cross-town rival Georgia State at the Bill Moore Tennis Center Wednesday in a match that is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. The Jackets are coming off a successful showing at the Michigan Invitational a week ago, in which Georgia Tech took wins in 21-of-22 and 7-of-9 doubles matches against teams from LSU, Michigan and Eastern Michigan.

“We are excited to be hosting our first dual-match of the season,” said Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “We are looking forward to a successful spring and are excited to begin play against such a strong Georgia State team. [Georgia State head coach] Andy Smith has done a great job with his teams in the past, as was evidenced by the problems that they gave us a year ago. We know that they will come out ready to play a tough match and I am looking forward to seeing how well our team competes on Wednesday.”

Senior newcomer Dasha Potapova begins her first season as a Yellow Jacket after spending the previous three years as a member of the Baylor tennis team and has melded well with the other upperclassmen, juniors Kelly Anderson, Lyndsay Shosho and Kacie Anson. Joining the upperclassmen on the court are sophomore Alison Silverio and freshmen Kristi Miller, Esther van Londen and Whitney McCray.

Following the match against the Panthers, Georgia Tech will return to action on Jan. 29th when it hosts Baylor in a match that will begin at 12 noon.
