ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech softball team attained a No. 16 ranking in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, announced on Tuesday afternoon. The No. 16 billing is the highest ever by a Tech squad. The Yellow Jackets will travel to Greenville, S.C., for a non-conference doubleheader against Furman on Wednesday, Feb. 16.
The Rambling Wreck are off to an 8-0 start this season, the best since beginning the 1991 campaign 13-0. Tech has outscored its opponents 45-8 through eight games and is hitting .315 as a team.
Junior shortstop Christine Sheridan led the offensive attack at the tourney, driving in the game-winning run in the championship game versus Bethune-Cookman in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Pasadena, Md., native hit .533, carried an on base percentage of .670, stole two bases and tied a school record with four hits versus Florida Atlantic.
Senior pitcher Jessica Sallinger became the Atlantic Coast Conference’s all-time career strikeouts leader and ranks No. 21 in the NCAA with 1,074. The Kennesaw, Ga., native is tied for third in career wins (86) and is fourth in complete games (96) and innings pitched (780.2).
Tech will head to Panthersville, Ga., for the Lady Panther Invitational this Saturday and Sunday. The Jackets will face Eastern Kentucky and Evansville on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. and square off with Georgia State on Sunday at 10 a.m. A consolation game will follow at 2:15 p.m. with the championship game scheduled for a 4:45 p.m. start.
