Tech Men's Tennis Sweeps Dual Matches from Charlotte and Mercer

NO. 25 GEORGIA TECH MEN’S TENNIS SWEEPS CHARLOTTE AND MERCER

ATLANTA – The 25th-ranked Georgia Tech men’s tennis team extended its current win streak to four by sweeping a pair of dual matches from Charlotte and Mercer on Sunday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The Yellow Jackets downed the 49ers of Charlotte by a 5-2 score and then shut out Mercer by a 7-0 score in the day’s second match.

In the morning match with Charlotte, Tech (4-1) got on top early by claiming the doubles point with a pair of doubles wins to open the day. The Yellow Jackets’ tandem of Joao Menano and Stephen Moros downed the 49ers’ duo of Santoso and Clark by an 8-4 score for the first win for Tech in doubles play. The team of West Nott and Scott Schnugg followed Menano and Moros at No. 2 doubles, battling to give the Jackets the win in doubles. Nott and Schnugg downed Nordwall and McGovern by a 9-8 (4) score to clinch the doubles point.

During the singles portion of the match, David Wright was Tech’s first winner at No. 2 singles, defeating Jacob Nordwall in three sets by a 1-6, 6-1, 6-0 score. Moros was the next winner, claiming a straight-set, 6-4, 6-4, victory over Jonathan McGovern at No. 4 singles. The win by Moros began a Yellow Jacket sweep of the Nos. 4-6 spots, as Schnugg and Nott followed him at the five and six spots respectively with victories. Schnugg downed Marlo Santoso in three sets by a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 score, while Nott defeated David Bolin in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

In the afternoon, the Yellow Jackets found the going easy against the Mercer Bears, winning every match and not dropping a set, en route to a 7-0 win.

The doubles portion of the match went smoothly for Tech, as the team of Roger Anderson and David Wright cruised past Felipe Echeverri and Akhaveia by an 8-1 score. They were followed by the team of Nott and Schnugg, who defeated the team of Whitting and Ricardo Echeverri by an 8-4 count. An 8-5 victory by Menano and Fabio Campos over Patel and Moore clinched the doubles point for Tech.

In singles action, the Yellow Jackets got things going early as Anderson defeated Michael Whitting at No. 1 singles by an impressive 6-1, 6-2 score. Menano, who defeated Felipe Echeverri in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, followed Anderson in the No. 2 spot.

Tech continued its dominance of the Bears with wins in the No. 3-No. 6 spots as well. The Jackets dropped just four games in the 3-5 matches, including a 6-0, 6-1 win by Schnugg over Jeff Moore and a 6-1, 6-0 decision by West Nott over Nima Akhaveia.

At the No. 5 spot, Fabio Campos downed Ricardo Echeverri in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, while Trevor Wilson defeated Subash Patel at No. 6 singles by a 6-4, 6-1 score.

Georgia Tech will now be off until Wednesday, February 20, when it hosts Georgia State at the Bill Moore Tennis Center beginning at 3:30 p.m.
