Tech Men's Tennis Readies for ACC Tournament

April 18, 2002

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team will look to improve its post-season chances when it opens play in the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Friday morning in Raleigh, N.C. The tournament, which got under way on Thursday, will be held at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center and run through April 21.

The Yellow Jackets (13-9, 5-3 ACC) finished the year strong, winning four of their last five regular-season matches, with the lone blemish being a 4-3 loss at home to Miami on April 14. Tech will be the fourth seed in the event and opens the tourney by facing fifth-seeded Florida State (12-9, 4-4) in the first round at 9 a.m. on Friday. The Jackets defeated the Seminoles during the regular season by a 4-3 score in Atlanta on April 12.

Tech individuals will continue to be led by junior Roger Anderson, who is currently ranked 27th in the latest ITA Poll and leads the Yellow Jackets with 26 singles wins on the year. Anderson is second on the team with 13 dual-match victories, while playing primarily at the No. 1 position.

The Jackets’ top doubles tandem has been the duo of Scott Schnugg and West Nott, who have climbed back into the national rankings, checking in at No. 46 in the latest poll. Schnugg and Nott lead the team with a 17-5 dual-match doubles record and a 26-8 overall record in 2002.

The winner of the match-up between Georgia Tech and Florida State will face the winner of the match between No. 1-seed Duke and No. 9-seed NC State in the semifinals on Saturday at 10 a.m. Full tournament coverage is available at www.theacc.com.
