Tech Men's Tennis Opens Fall Schedule at Southern Intercollegiate

Sept. 23, 2004

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team will open its fall schedule on Friday by competing in the Southern Intercollegiate in Athens, Ga. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The Yellow Jackets will join three other teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference in the event. Play will begin on Friday with two rounds of singles play and continue on through Sunday.

Fifteen of the 27 teams in the event are ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, including seven amongst the top-25; Ole Miss (No. 5), tournament host Georgia (No. 6), Florida (No. 8), Duke (No. 9), Kentucky (No. 14), Vanderbilt (No. 16) and Tennessee (No. 21). Georgia Tech is currently ranked No. 32 and ACC counterpart Virginia Tech is ranked No. 49.

Among the Jackets that will be part of the field will be sophomore Jose Luis Muguruza, who currently is ranked No. 71, junior Marko Rajevac and senior Noah Tyler. Also competing for the Yellow Jackets are newcomers Scott Blackmon, George Gvelesiani and David North.

“It’s going to be some strong competition,” Head Coach Kenny Thorne stated. “The Southern Intercollegiate gets a lot of the top guys from around the SEC and some of the schools from around the south. It will be a great test for each of our guys. It will be good to get out there and get some direction for our team and see where we are and were we need to head.

“It’s the first tournament of the year,” Thorne added. “You get the jitters out and get everyone excited and focused on the competition that’s going to be there this year. It also gives our freshmen a chance to play against some of the top competition in the nation.”
