Tech Men's Tennis Falls to Alabama, 4-3

TUSCALOOSA, ALA. – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team was unable to rally after dropping the doubles point and fell to 18th-ranked Alabama by a 4-3 score on Friday night at the Hank Crisp Indoor Tennis Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Yellow Jackets (2-1) opened the day in doubles action and got their lone win at No. 2, at the team of Roger Anderson and Jason Pieters defeated the Crimson Tide’s Maxim Belski and Brad Friedman by an 8-4 score. After Tech’s team of Marko Rajevac and Joao Menano fell to William Boyles and Chris Gostek by a 9-7 score at No. 3, the Jackets’ tandem of West Nott and Scott Schnugg were unable to hold on to an early lead and fell to Alabama’s team of Geoff Hiscox and Stephen Mitchell in a tiebreaker, 9-8.

In singles play, Tech won the first two matches to move ahead in the match by a 2-1 score, winning at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Anderson battled for three sets to earn a win for the Jackets at No. 1 over 39th-ranked Maxim Belski by scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Schnugg won a straight-set match over 63rd-ranked Stephen Mitchell, claiming the first set by a 6-1 score before battling to win the second set, 7-6.

The Yellow Jackets earned a split in singles play when Jason Pieters rallied to win his match at No. 4 singles in three sets against the Tide’s Geoff Hiscox. Pieters won the first set by a 7-5 score, before dropping a 6-3 decision in the second set. He then battled to win the third set by a 7-6 count.

Georgia Tech will now be off until Feb. 14, when it hosts in-state rival Georgia in a match that will get underway at 3 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
