Tech Men's Tennis Faces Florida State at ACC Championship

April 17, 2003

ATLANTA — The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team, seeded sixth, will face third-seeded Florida State in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis championship on Friday at 3 p.m. The four-day tournament is being held at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C.

The Yellow Jackets (12-8, 3-5 ACC) will be looking to avenge a 4-3 loss in the regular-season finale to the Seminoles (13-9, 6-2 ACC) a week ago when the two meet up tomorrow.

Tech reached the finals of the ACC Tournament a year ago, before falling to North Carolina by a 4-3 score. In the 2002 semifinals, the Jackets upset top-seeded Duke, ending the Blue Devils reign as ACC champions. Last year marked the fourth time that Tech had reached the finals at the ACCs, but the Jackets have yet to capture the league title.

Senior All-ACC honoree Roger Anderson will lead the Yellow Jackets into the 2003 event, as he is second on the team with a 23-8 overall singles record and is 11-7 in dual matches this season, playing in the top spot of the singles lineup. In doubles action, Anderson has teamed with junior Scott Schnugg to form Tech’s top doubles team with a 12-1 record in the spring and a 13-2 overall mark. The duo is currently ranked 20th in the latest ITA poll.

Schnugg has also been one of the Jackets’ top singles performers this season, posting a 14-6 dual-match record and a team-leading 25-13 overall mark this year, while playing primarily at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Schnugg also earned All-ACC honors for the first time in his career in 2003 after teaming with Anderson to capture the league’s Flight I doubles crown.
