Tech Men's Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision to Florida State

April 12, 2003

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team got a pair of doubles wins to open the day, but was unable to hold on and dropped a 4-3 decision at Florida State in the regular season finale for both teams. The match was played at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Yellow Jackets (12-8, 3-5 ACC) got the early lead on the Seminoles (13-9, 6-2 ACC) as they won a pair of doubles matches to begin the day. After Tech’s team of Marko Rajevac and Joao Menano were winners at No. 2 doubles over Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub by an 8-4 score, the Jackets clinched the point with a win at No.1. Tech’s 20th-ranked team of Roger Anderson and Scott Schnugg defeated FSU’s 45th-ranked tandem of Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd by an 8-5 score to give the Yellow Jackets the early 1-0 lead.

In singles action, Scott Schnugg and Joao Menano were the only winners of the day for Tech. Schnugg won his match at No. 2 against Romain Jurd in straight sets, winning the first set in a tiebreaker 7-4 and then holding on for a 7-5 second-set victory. Menano had little trouble with Chris Westerhof at No. 3 singles, winning in straight sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.

The Nos. 4 and 5 matches proved to be the decisive encounters as Florida State’s Jeff Groslimond downed the Jackets’ Trevor McLeod in a close three-set match at No. 5 by scores of 6-4, 6-7 (8) and 7-5. The Seminoles clinched the match when Chip Webb downed Tech’s West Nott in a third set tiebreaker to win their match at No.4 by scores of 3-6, 6-3, and 7-6 (4).

The Yellow Jackets will next be in action on April 18 when they will compete in the ACC Championships at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. Seeds and pairings for the tournament will be announced on Monday.
