Tech Men's Tennis Dominates Virginia, 6-1

ATLANTA – After heavy rain moved the match inside and delayed the start by nearly two hours, the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team stormed back to defeat the Cavaliers, 6-1. The Yellow Jackets swept the doubles point and fought hard to win five of the six singles matches to move to 10-8 overall and 3-3 in the ACC.

Georgia Tech jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match by sweeping the doubles matches. Tech’s tandem of David Wright and Roger Anderson defeated the Cavaliers’ Mike Duquette and Stephen Nolan by a score of 8-4 at No. 1, while the team of West Nott and Scott Schnugg defeated the Cavaliers’ duo of Jonathan Chou and Jason Rosenburg by an 8-4 score at No.2. At the number three spot, the Yellow Jackets’ Fabio Campos and Jaoa Menano battled against Dillon Walker and Jay Curtis to win the match 9-7.

In singles play, the Jackets continued to fight, winning five of the day’s six matches. Tech’s David Wright got things rolling in the first singles match of the day, as junior picked up a win over Mike Duquette rallying to win in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 2 spot, sophomore Scott Schnugg was victorious over Jason Romesburg in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, and 7-5.

Sophomore Joao Menano kept things going at the No. 3 spot, as he defeated the Cavalier’s Stephen Nolan in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Sophomore West Nott followed at No. 5 as he downed Greg Alpert in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Alex Navinkov was the Jackets’ final singles winner of the day, as he downed Dillon Walker in straight sets by a 6-3, 6-2 score at No. 6.

Virginia’s lone singles win of the day came at the No. 4 spot, as Jay Curtis defeated Tech’s Stephen Moros in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-2.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action against Clemson Wednesday, April 3 at 2:30 pm at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
