Tech Men's Swimming and Diving Places Sixth at Georgia Invitational, Women Finish Ninth

ATHENS – Georgia Tech’s men and women’s swimming and diving teams completed competition Sunday at the Georgia Invitational. The Yellow Jacket men finished in sixth place with 347 points, while the women’s squad placed ninth with 37 points.

The Jackets were led by the performances of junior Shilo Ayalon and senior Leo Salinas in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Ayalon placed third in a time of 15:36.26, while Salinas placed fifth. Other strong performances came from junior Josh Hersko, who finished sixth in the 100 free with a season-best time of 45.37, and junior Tomonori Tsuji, who finished seventh in the 200 breast with a time of 2:01.79. Junior James Salazar was ninth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:49.56.

On the women’s side, freshman Cara DeVinny won the bonus final and finished 17th overall in the 200 fly, while teammate Lisa Hancock was 18th. Michelle Maguire was 18th in the 1,650 free in a time of 17:24.43, while Ann Battle was 22nd in that same event. Maguire also finished 20th in the 200 backstroke.

Freshman diver Amy Sutton was the top point scorer of the meet for women. She placed ninth in the one-meter event with a score of 219.10 and was 16th in the three-meter competition.

Georgia captured the women’s title, while Minnesota finished first on the men’s side.

The Yellow Jackets will now break from competition until travelling to face Southeastern Conference opponent Alabama on January 12.
