CARY, N.C. – The Georgia Tech cross country team took part in the 2009 ACC Championships on Saturday morning on the WakeMed Soccer and Cross Country Complex in Cary, N.C. The Yellow Jacket men’s squad registered an eighth place finish in the event, which was their best since 2004, while the women’s squad finished 11th
Overall, N.C. State captured the conference championship on the men’s side, edging two-time defending champion Virginia with 56 points, while on the women’s side, Florida State took home the title with 37 points.
Individually for the Yellow Jacket men, junior D.J. McMillian was the team’s top finisher in 46th, running the WakeMed 8K course in 25:05.08. Senior Greg Johnson finished in 25:09.06 to place 49th, while senior Matt Hickey finished 57th with a time of 25:21.4. Sophomore Phillip O’Brien rounded out the top Yellow Jacket finishers on the day in 59th with a time of 25:23.5.
For the women, sophomore Mary Kate DuBard was Tech’s best finisher on the day with a time of 21:58.2 to finish 46th. Sophomore Annie Martin ran the 6K course in 22:25 to finish 64th, while freshman Elena Hubbard finished 80th in a time of 23:13.9.
Overall, Virginia’s Emil Heineking won the men’s race with a 23:15.5 effort, while for the women, Florida State’s Susan Kuijken was victorious in 19:39.3.
The Yellow Jackets return to the course on Nov. 14th when they take part in the NCAA South Region Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
