ATLANTA–Led by a seventh-place finish by sophomore Ann Armsby, the Georgia Tech women’s cross country team opened its season by placing second in the Georgia State Invitational on Saturday morning. Junior Rob Kuhn led the Jackets to a second place finish in the men’s race with his tenth place effort.
The Yellow Jacket women tallied 50 points, finishing behind Auburn, who had 39 points. The Tech men finished with 63 points, just two points ahead of host Georgia State and behind Auburn who got the lowest score possible (15 points).
Armsby had an impressive opener, placing seventh overall with a five-kilometer time of 19:10. Also posting top-20 finishes for the Jackets were sophomore Mary Chind (8th), freshmen Elena Linn (10th), Nisha Kurian (11th), Emily Yandle (14th) and Maria Hampton (16th), junior Jennifer Grabowski (18th) and senior Jenny Lentz (20th).
Angela Homan of Auburn won the race with a time of 17:20, over one minute ahead of Troy University’s Lindsey Waldorf.
On the men’s side, junior Rob Kuhn placed tenth with a time of 26:48 in the eight-kilometer race. Freshmen Ryan Pfeffer (12th) and Nazar Trilisky (13th) captured the next two spots for the Tech competing in their first race. Also figuring into the scoring for the Jackets were sophomores Chris Clarke (18th) and Blake Fertitta (19th).
Auburn swept the men’s race taking the top seven spots and eight of the top-10 positions. Leading the way for Auburn was Andrew Heath who won the race with a time of 25:35.
The Jackets will return to action September 17th at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
