Tech Men's 400 Free Relay Takes 11th at U.S. Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS – Highlighted by an 11th-place finish by the 400-meter freestyle relay team, the Georgia Tech men’s swimming team moved into 13th place Thursday at the 2003 ConocoPhillips U.S. National Swimming Championships.

The relay of Matt Figh, Itai Eden, Yonatan Cohen and Josh Hersko posted a time of 3:32.86 to finish second in its heat and add 12 points to the team total. The Tech men have tallied 23 points in the first three days of the five-day meet.

Figh was also the top individual finisher Thursday by placing eighth in the bonus consolation final of 200-meter freestyle. He clocked a time of 1:54.62 to finish 24th overall. Figh advanced to his second bonus consolation final in as many nights with a 24th-place swim of 1:53.28 in the prelims of the 200 free earlier Thursday. He finished second in the bonus consolation of the 200 fly Wednesday. Eden (68th place) and Eduardo Oliver (73rd place) also competed in the 200 free Thursday.

In other relay action, the women’s squad of Meghan DeVinney, Lisa Hancock, Ashley Kracke and Anna Saum finished 35th overall and fifth in its heat with a time of 4:02.57 in the 400 free relay.

The only other individual in action for the Jackets Thursday was sophomore Cara DeVinny, who was 39th in the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:02.54.

The meet resumes Friday and concludes Saturday with 9 a.m. prelims and 6 p.m. finals each day.
