CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Led by strong all-around performances on both sides, the Georgia Tech men and women’s track and field teams each stand in second place after the first day of competition of the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet is being held at the University of North Carolina’s Eddie Smith Field House.
The Yellow Jacket women posted 46 points and trail first-place NC State by just 2.5 points, while Tech’s men have 26 points and trail first-place North Carolina by only one point.
Sophomore Renee Metivier, who set a school record with a time of 16:12.26 in the 5000 meters and placed second to earn All-ACC honors, led the women. Her time also automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Junior Amy Dock placed fourth in the event with a NCAA provisional mark of 16:44.47, while junior Katie Griffin was sixth.
Also earning all-conference honors were junior Jessica DeFreitas, who placed third in the long jump with a season-best mark of 19’09.75″, and senior Angela Levens, who finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 60’10.75″.
Also scoring for the Jackets were the distance medley relay team, which finished fifth, high jumpers Jamie Ostrov and Jessica Ledbetter, who placed fifth and seventh, respectively, and senior Mishanta Reyes, who was fifth in the long jump.
On the men’s side, freshman Zeb Sion was the lone Jacket to secure All-ACC honors on day one. He placed second in the shot put with a season-best toss of 56’05.75″, while classmate Jonathan Spillman placed fifth.
Tech also received a second-place finish from its distance medley relay team of Barton Crist, Aaron Sink, David Schmidt and Joe Stegall, who clocked a season-best time of 10:00.86.
Others scoring for Tech were juniors Chris Crawley and Brian Fraser, who were fourth and eighth in the long jump, respectively.
Several Yellow Jackets secured positions in Saturday’s finals with their solid qualifying performances on Friday. Sophomore Brendon Mahoney led the way for the men, qualifying first in both the mile and 800 meters, while Tech’s talented trio of men’s 400-meter runners each reached the final. Junior Bryan Swarn was second, while junior Sharif Azim was sixth and freshman Brian Ford was seventh.
Freshman Dennis Davis qualified sixth in the 60 meters, while sophomore Tim Johnson placed fourth in the 800 meters to advance to Saturday.
As for the women’s qualifiers, sophomore Amandi Rhett was first in the 60 meters with a season-best time of 7.49, and teammate Jessica DeFreitas was third.
Also reaching Saturday’s finals were freshman Shanta Smith, who was fifth in the 400 meters, senior Nicole Campbell, who was eighth in the mile and senior Sara Pardue, who was fourth in the 800 meters.
Freshman Dana Rogers and senior Mishanta Reyes, who placed third and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles, respectively, also move on to Saturday’s competition.
Action begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the women’s weight throw and concludes with the women’s 4×400 meter relay at 4:30 p.m.
Both teams are in search of their first ACC title.
