Tech Lands Three On All-ACC Academic Men's Tennis Team

Aug. 3, 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez, Kevin King and Ryan Smith were named to the 2009 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s Tennis Team as announced by ACC Commissioner John D. Swofford Monday.

Gomez, a sophomore from Alicante, Spain, earns his second consecutive honor, and is one of four ITA All-Americans to earn All-Academic recognition as well. He concluded his 2009 campaign with a 29-10 singles record, and made a trip to the Round of 32 at the NCAA Singles Championships. Earlier in the year, Gomez was selected to the All-ACC Men’s Tennis Team, was named the ITA Mideast Region Player to Watch and reached a No. 7 national ranking.

Smith, a sophomore from Marietta, Ga., joins Gomez as one of 10 repeat selections from 2008. The biochemistry major notched 13 wins in singles play to go with 17 doubles victories.

King, a freshman from Peachtree City, Ga., earned a spot on his first All-ACC Academic Team. He is one of just three first-year student-athletes to make the list. He picked up 17 singles wins and 19 doubles wins on the year.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
