ATLANTA – Deck McGuire, who struck out a career-high 13 batters while leading Georgia Tech to a 9-0 victory against Lipscomb in the 2009 season opener, has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
McGuire, a sophomore from Richmond, Va., yielded just three hits and one walk while combining on a three-hit shutout of the Bisons in the first weekend start of his career. His 13 strikeouts were the most by a Yellow Jacket pitcher since the 2000 season, and four more than his previous career high of nine, set against Georgia in 2008.
McGuire faced just three batters over the minimum against a talented Lipscomb team that advanced to last season’s NCAA Tournament.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action this Tuesday and Wednesday when they travel to Statesboro to face Georgia Southern. Tech will return to Atlanta to host Rutgers for a three-game series this weekend, with McGuire taking the mound Friday at 4 p.m.
