THE FLATS – Georgia Tech looks to snap a three-match skid this weekend when 38th-ranked Virginia Tech and No. 4 Virginia come to Atlanta for weekend matches at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
The Yellow Jackets (7-9, 1-5 ACC) face Virginia Tech (10-7, 3-3 ACC) at 5 p.m. Friday, and Virginia (15-2, 6-0 ACC) at 12 noon Saturday. Admission is free to both matches, and parking is available along Fowler Street and Eighth Street, as well as in the McCamish Pavilion lot.
Last weekend, Tech lost a 4-3 decision at 25th-ranked Wake Forest Saturday and a 6-1 match at No. 43 NC State Sunday. The Jackets have beaten only Boston College in conference play this season. The Hokies defeated Florida State and Miami at home last weekend to even their conference slate. The Cavaliers have a six-match winning streak built with wins last weekend over the same two teams as well as William & Mary at home.
Tech is led in doubles by the nation’s 23rd-ranked team of freshman Carlos Benito and junior Eduardo Segura, both of Madrid, Spain, who are 10-5 this spring.
In singles, Segura played at the top of the Tech lineup for both matches last weekend and it 6-7 in dual matches this spring. Sophomore Nathan Rakitt (Marietta, Ga.) plays No. 2 and has an 8-7 mark, while freshman Cole Fiegel (Alachua, Fla.) moved up to No. 3 last weekend on the heels of an 11-1 start in the spring.
Benito, 7-8, played at No. 4 last weekend, followed by freshman Will Showers (Norcross, Ga.) at No. 5 and junior Colin Edwards (Valrico, Fla.) at No. 6.
