THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s men’s tennis team continues its run of nationally-ranked opponents on Thursday when the 46th-ranked Yellow Jackets travel to Athens, Ga., to face No. 35 Georgia at 2:30 p.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Tech (6-2) dropped its first Atlantic Coast Conference match, 6-1, to No. 38 Florida State on the road last time out. The Yellow Jackets are 2-2 against nationally ranked teams this spring, including a 4-2 victory over No. 17 South Carolina on Jan. 31. Georgia (3-5) has played a very difficult schedule early, dropping matches to No. 2 Southern California and No. 4 UCLA in Los Angeles and to three top-25 teams in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
Head coach Kenny Thorne has the nation’s No. 36 doubles tandem – junior Eduardo Segura and freshman Carlos Benito, who won their first seven dual matches of the spring before falling at Florida State. Their resume includes a victory over Georgia’s top duo of Ben Wagland and Hernus Pieters in mid-January. Tech has won the doubles point in six of its eight matches.
Sophomore Nathan Rakitt is 5-2 at the top of the Tech singles lineup, while Benito is 5-2 at No. 2, Segura is 4-3 at No. 3, sophomore Casey Kay is 3-3 at No. 4, freshman Cole Fiegel is 6-0 at No. 5, and freshman Will Showers is 1-2 at No. 6.
