Tech Freshman Lead Way At Southern Intercollegiate

Sept. 21, 2007

ATHENS, Ga. – The freshman led the way for the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team on day one of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

“This was just a good solid day of competition,” Head Coach Kenny Thorne said. “The freshman competed very well and held their own against some really tough competition.”

Doug Kenny, a freshman from Roswell, Ga., enjoyed a very successful start to his collegiate career, earning two singles victories in the Division III bracket. Kenny defeated Enrique Meloni of UNC-Wilmington, 6-4, 7-6 (4) and Steven Myers of Charleston, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

“I am very proud of Doug (Kenny),” Thorne said. “He has not played many matches or tournaments but he just came out, played hard and won.”

Also earning their first victories for Georgia Tech were freshman Ryan Smith and Eliot Potvin. Smith defeated James Eason of the Citadel, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Potvin picked up his victory after holding off Steven Myers of Charleston to earn a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 win.

“Ryan (Smith) lost a tough first set but was able to battle back to close it out,” Thorne added. “Eliot (Potvin) just played to win and that is what we are looking for.”

Competition continues tomorrow morning at 8 a.m., when George Gvelesiani and Ryan Smith face-off against Davey Sandgren and J.P. Smith of Tennessee in doubles action.

Results for all matches will be posted on RamblinWreck.com following the conclusion of doubles and singles each day.
