Tech Falls to FSU, 5-2

March 9, 2009

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech took the doubles point, but then lost the first five singles matches, including the No. 1 and 2 positions, and the Yellow Jackets dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 15 Florida State in men’s tennis Monday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Tech fell to 5-6 overall, 1-2 in the ACC, while the Seminoles improved to 11-5 overall. 2-1 in the ACC.

“We beat some good teams to win the doubles point,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “We’ve been focusing on that and knew it would be important if we were to beat them. We won a couple first sets and got into tiebreakers in two others that could have given us some momentum. But they won the tiebreakers in shifted the momentum in their favor. We just need to convert on critical points.”

Tech won the doubles point after its 59th-ranked doubles team of Guillermo Gomez and Ryan Smith defeated Jean-Yves Aubone and Vahid Mirzadeh, 8-6, at No. 1, and Miguel Muguruza and Austin Roebuck downed Clint Bowels and Chris Reiman, 8-3, at No. 3.

But the Seminoles stormed back to win the first four singles matches, three of them in straight sets, to clinch the victory. FSU captured the lead with victories at No. 2, when 42nd-ranked Bowles took a straight-set match, 6-2, 6-2, from Tech freshman Kevin King, and at No. 5, when Chris Cloer defeated sophomore Doug Kenny, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Aubone, the nation’s 28th-ranked player, increased the Seminoles’ lead to 3-1 with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over 11th-ranked Gomez, then clinched the match with a 7-6, 7-6 win by Mirzadeh over Tech sophomore Miguel Muguruza.

Andrew Bailey defeated Tech freshman Dusan Miljevic, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, for the fifth singles win, before Tech sophomore Eliot Potvin captured the Jackets’ only point with a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 win over Maciek Sykut.

Tech is off the rest of the week and returns to action next Tuesday, March 17, at 2:30 p.m. against Tennessee Tech.
