Tech Falls at No. 17 North Carolina, 70-57

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Tonie Morgan and Cameron Swartz combined for 28 points on Sunday, but it wasn’t enough to overcome No. 17 North Carolina as Georgia Tech fell 70-57 in Carmichael Arena.

Georgia Tech (10-10, 1-8 ACC) opened the game answering every UNC (14-5, 5-3 ACC) move and held a 7-5 lead following a Kara Dunn three-pointer at the 7:05 mark. But the Tar Heels grabbed an 18-11 lead after the first using a 9-2 spurt. Tech cut it to a two-possession game when Avyonce Carter hit a pair of three-pointers early in the second frame, 23-19, but it would be the closest the Yellow Jackets came the remainder of the game.

Tech trimmed the score to eight points off a triple by Swartz early in the third quarter, but strong shooting from UNC would open the largest lead of 21 points, 57-36, with 2:18 to play in the third. Tech kept battling until the end, cutting the score to 69-57 by Carmyn Harrison and Swartz putting together a 6-0 run, but the rally wasn’t strong enough to overcome the Tar Heels.

Shooting struggles plagued the Yellow Jackets, finishing at just 35.5 percent from the field, while UNC shot 47.4 percent. Tech hit seven three-pointers, three from Swartz and two from Carter, and converted 13 UNC turnovers into 16 points.

Morgan led Tech with 15 points and eight rebounds, nearly missing her second-straight double-double, after converting 6-of-9 attempts from the field. Swartz added 13 points to the scoreboard.

UNC had four players finish in double-figures led by Deja Kelly with 18 points. The Tar Heels won the battle on the glass, 42-35, paced by Alyssa Ustby’s eight rebounds.

Georgia Tech returns to the hardwood on Thursday, Jan. 26 to play host to Clemson. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
