Dec. 14, 2003

Box Score

ATLANTA – Freshman Stephanie Higgs scored 13 points, including 11 of Tech’s final 13, to help Georgia Tech (6-1) to a 70-48 victory over UCF (2-4) Sunday afternoon at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The win over UCF marked the largest margin of victory for the Jackets this season. She and senior Fallon Stokes were the only players to score in double figures for the Yellow Jackets, as Tech had 10 players play more than 10 minutes in the contest.

Higgs scored her first points of her career in the contest, and had nine points in five minutes to end the game. She went 3-for-5 from beyond the three-point arc and had two rebounds and an assist for Tech. Stokes scored 20 points in 24 minutes of play to lead all scorers, pulled down four rebounds, dished out three assists and had two steals. Sophomore Kasha Terry started her first game of the season, and scored six points while pulling down nine rebounds. She also blocked two UCF shots, keeping her average at 2.0 blocked shots per game.

“I was very excited about Stephanie’s play this afternoon,” said Tech head coach MaChelle Joseph. “I have watched her for three years now, and I knew she was a scorer. Today she put the ball on the floor and was able to put it in the basket.”

Tech went on a 10-0 run with 16:09 on the clock in the first half and never looked back as UCF went a total of 6:01 without the benefit of a basket. During that time, the Golden Knights turned the ball over six times, with Tech scoring baskets off of four of those turnovers. The Yellow Jackets scored 23 points off turnovers in the contest, while UCF scored 12. Tech also had 19 second-chance points to the Golden Knights’ seven, as the Yellow Jackets pulled down 20 offensive rebounds as compared to UCF’s six.

Georgia Tech will leave Tuesday for a two-game road trip to the Northeastern United States. The Jackets play Thursday afternoon against Old Dominion before playing Princeton Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on WREK-Radio, 91.1 FM in Atlanta, and online at www.wrek.org, while livestats will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com.
