ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech cross country teams will line up at the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship meet on Saturday, Oct. 27 in Charlottesville, Va. The conference meet is returning to the University of Virginia and Panorama Farms for the second-consecutive year.
The ACC men’s 8K race will begin at 10 a.m. followed by women’s 6K race at 11:00 am.
“As always, the ACC Championship Meet has all the elements of an exciting event,” head coach Alan Drosky said. “There will be some great competition on an outstanding, spectator-friendly course. The Panorama Farms course is a challenging and with significant rain this week, should be very similar to last year. We are going into this meet healthy and fit and we’re anxious to compete on Saturday.”
The women’s team, ranked fifth in the South Region, will be challenged by four teams ranked among the nation’s top 30. Tech seniors Elena Linn, Nisha Kurian and Jenny Sims have each took turns crossing the line first for the Jackets and look to continue that trend to keep the Jackets in contention for the title.
“The women’s race will be outstanding, featuring a deep field of talented teams,” Droksy said. “Our front three can put us in a spot to finish well, but we still need some great efforts from number four on back. They are very capable and certainly ready. If they perform as they have for the last few weeks in training, we could have a very good day.”
The Tech men, who will run against two teams ranked nationally, are currently No. 12 in the latest South Region poll. The team, led by seniors David Herren and Cristan Duvall, has performed well this season and will benefit from the return of sophomore Iain Turnbull, who was out with an injury.
“There are a lot of solid teams that will compete for the middle spots in the men’s field and as it always does, will come down to who can get it done on Saturday,” Drosky added. “I like our team, the guys have prepared very well and have become more confident in their fitness with each race, and I like how they’ve responded in practice over the last several weeks.”
