Tech Cross Country Returns to Action at Saturday's Georgia Intercollegiate Championships

Oct. 3, 2001

The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams will continue their seasons Saturday at the Georgia Intercollegiate Championships held in Atlanta. Competition is slated to begin at 9 a.m. at Georgia State’s Panthersville course.

This annual event will feature several teams from across the state and encompasses all levels of collegiate competition. Other Division I teams slated to compete include Georgia State and Mercer.

Yellow Jacket head coach Alan Drosky expects most of the Tech men to compete in the eight-kilometer race. “Having watched them race once now and seen where they’re at, I think they will benefit from another race this weekend,” said Drosky. “I am hoping to have the men sharpen up a little bit and get ready for the Furman Invitational,” which is scheduled for Oct. 13 and will be held on the same course as this year’s NCAA Championships.

On the women’s side, Drosky plans to rest some of his top runners, however, he does not expect this move to hinder the team’s performance. “We’ve got a lot of depth,” said Drosky. “I still think we’ll have a very good team run.” The women will race over a 5K course.

Tech has a long history of strong performances at the Georgia Intercollegiate. The men’s squad has captured the team title every year since 1990, except in ’95 when the squad did not compete. The Yellow Jacket women have claimed the team crown each year since ’94, except once. They also did not compete in ’95.

Georgia Tech returns to action for the first time since the Roy Griak Invitational, held September 29 in Minneapolis, Minn. This meet featured the majority of the nation’s ranked teams. Sparked by Renee Metivier’s seventh-place finish, the women placed 14th, while the men placed 32nd.
