Tech Cross Country Heads To NCAA South Region Championships

Nov. 13, 2008

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams continue their seasons Saturday at the 2008 NCAA South Region Championships at Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville, Tenn. The women’s 6K begins at 10 a.m., with the men’s 10K to follow at 11 a.m.

“The NCAA South Regional will be a great test for us,” head coach Alan Drosky said. “The course is challenging, the weather will be a factor, and the competition will be great. Our teams have run on the course this year already and they are well-prepared.”

The men’s squad, ranked 10th in the region, will try to improve upon their 10th-place finish at the ACC meet. Seniors E.C. Gibbs and Nazar Trilisky have led the team all season and will try to catapult the men to a top-two spot at the regional meet and into the NCAA Championships. They will run the 10,000-meter race for the first time this season.

“The men have had a solid season and have run well as a team,” Drosky added. We’ve had success running as a pack all year but we’ve got to get more of a presence closer to the front of the race. The longer race (6.2 miles) will be more of a test for our middle-distance oriented guys, but they’ve done the work necessary to do well.”

The women’s team, which finished 11th at the ACC Championships, will look for freshmen Mary Kate DuBard and Annie Martin to lead them into a top finish at the regional Saturday. The newcomers have been the Jackets top two finishers all season long.

“The South Regional offers a great opportunity to our women,” assistant coach Becky Megesi said. “I think we’ve yet to put together our best team race and that’s our goal for this weekend. They can do it, they have the ability, and they have done the work.”

Results for the NCAA South Region Championships will be available following the meet at RamblinWreck.com.
