Tech Cross Country Heads To Auburn Invitational Saturday

Oct. 2, 2008

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams head to the Auburn Invitational this Saturday in Auburn, Ala. The collegiate competition begins at 8:30 a.m. CT with the 24-team women’s 5K race. The men follow at 10:15 a.m. with a 27-team 8K at Indian Pines Golf Course.

“We’re excited about returning to the Auburn Cross Country Invitational. It’s been a few years, but we’ve competed there many times and know it’s a great meet,” head coach Alan Drosky said. “There will be some great competition with teams in our region, as well as outstanding national competition in schools like Washington, Iowa, and Oregon State.”

The Yellow Jackets enter their fourth tournament of the season after competing at the Roy Griak Invitational one week ago. The women placed 14th out of 20 teams in the 6K race, with a pair of freshmen leading the way. Mary Kate DuBard paced the Tech women with a 21:58 time, finishing in 21st place. Classmate Annie Martin also finished in the top half of the 222 runners, finishing the course in a time of 23:30.

“Our women are looking forward to their first 5000m (3.1 mile) race,” Drosky added. “Mary Kate is running very well and is giving us some great running up front. Behind her is a close group that is coming along well, but we’re looking for them to raise their game a little bit more this week.”

The Tech men, who finished in 17th place at the Griak, were led by senior E.C. Gibbs with a time of 25:37 in the 8K. Senior Nazar Trilisky was the second Yellow Jacket to cross the line with a 25:45 mark last weekend.

“The men have a solid, tight group and still are pretty interchangeable from race to race,” Drosky added. “We look for that to continue again this week, but we also need to be a little tougher in the middle of the race.”
