THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech swimming and diving teams defeated SCAD and fell to No. Texas A&M on Friday at McAuley Aquatic Center.
“Despite missing some athletes, the men and women put forth a great effort today. I was proud of the way they fought, and I know it will bode well for the near future in ACC and NCAA competition,” Toni M. And Richard L. Bergmark Swimming and Diving Head Coach Courtney Shealy Hart said.
Batur Ünlü was the standout for the Jackets today as he came out on top in three of the men’s events. Ünlü won the 200 free (1:37.30), 100 free (44.82) and 500 free (4:24.45).
The men had several top performers who claimed spots in the top three in several events. Will Coady championed the men’s 50 free (20.60) and placed third in the men’s 100 free (45.28). Daniel Kertesz earned a second-place finish in the men’s 100 breast (54.71) and third-place finish in the men’s 50 free (20.71). Berke Saka claimed second in the men’s 100 back (49.13) and finished fourth in the men’s 200 back (1:49.30). After an exciting battle in the men’s 1000 free, Mert Kilavuz placed second with a time of 9:10.23.
At the start of the meet, the men’s 200 medley relay team of Saka, Kertesz, Leandro Odorici and Coady swam a first-place time of 1:28.32. Kertesz, Coady, Odorici and Ünlü capped off competition with a second-place time of 1:21.65 in the men’s 200 free relay.
Several of the women’s swimmers recorded successful performances. Tech swept the women’s 100 fly with Zora Ripkova championing the event (55.51), Rei Kuramoto placing second (57.06) and Lindsey Merk taking home third (57.33). Kuramoto also placed third in the women’s 200 fly (2:02.70) and Ripkova finished fourth in the women’s 200 free (1:52.88).
Clarissa Sabin placed in the women’s breaststroke events. Sabin came in second in the 100 breast (1:03.32) and third in the 200 breast (2:19.74). Allison Brown recorded a second-place time of 5:05.23 in the women’s 500 free and finished fourth in the women’s 1000 free (10:29.45). McKenzie Campbell placed second in the women’s 200 fly (2:01.08) and women’s 200 IM (2:03.99). Newcomer Anna Hadjiloizou earned third-place times in both the women’s 50 free (23.42) and 100 free (51.59).
The women’s 200 medley relay comprised of Kendal Chunn, Sabin, Merk and Hadjiloizou placed second with a time of 1:44.37. In the women’s 200 free relay, Hadjiloizou, Ripkova, Caroline Pape and Sophie Murphy took home third place (1:34.20).
Diving was not scored at today’s meet.
